Remembering the Life and Legacy of John Trudell

John Trudell, noted activist, poet and Native thinker, walked on this morning after a lengthy bout with cancer. His family included some of his last messages to Indian country in a press release. Among them: “I want people to remember me as they remember me.”

John Trudell was a Santee Dakota activist, artist, actor, and poet, who led a life dedicated to indigenous human rights, land and language issues. He helped spark a spoken word movement that is a continuation of Native American oral traditions. He walked on December 8 at the age of 69.

Born on February 15, 1946 in Omaha, he spent his early years living on the Santee Reservation in northern Nebraska. His father was Santee and his mother was of Mexican Indian heritage. He had a normal life until his mother died at age 6, and the new rock and roll music resonated with him from ages 9-12. He said high school was not good for him and would enlist in the U.S. Navy from 1963 until 1967, to get away. He married Fenicia “Lou” Ordonez in 1968 in California, briefly attended college, thinking he would go into radio and broadcasting.

Everything changed in 1969 when Native American students and organizers, Trudell among them, occupied Alcatraz Island from November 20, 1969 to June 11, 1970. That group became “Indians of All Tribes,” and they issued the manifesto, We Hold the Rock, and eventually the book, Alcatraz is Not an Island. The Alcatraz Occupation became an incubator for the nascent Native American rights movement, including the American Indian Movement (AIM) in Minneapolis. The legal basis for this occupation was the Treaty of Fort Laramie of 1868, which said that any abandoned federal property would revert to the Indian Nations. This treaty’s legality would also inspire many more actions across Indian country. Trudell has always maintained that all these political actions were not just moral, ethical issues but were legal issues, according to Native treaty rights and federal trust responsibilities.

Trudell used his broadcasting experience on the airwaves of “Radio Free Alcatraz” (a clip from the program can be heard on the 2005 documentary Trudell). His marriage would end during this period as he become a leading Native spokesman attracting national attention. The negotiations over Alcatraz, the proposed Indian Center and the occupation itself fell apart in 1971, but so many names of Native activists, organizers, artists, writers and actors from that time would become prominent in the ensuing struggles, movement and documentation.

The educational system of the U.S. prepares us to: 1. Identify with and defend U.S. political and corporate interests (military, police, security). 2.Become a semi-skilled, underpaid and apolitical labor force. 3. Become professional overseers/managers of corporate interests. 4. Be apolitical completely or to only entertain “legitimate” methods of resistance (petitions, voting, courts marches, etc.). 5. Enrich and empower the very people/institutions that dominate us. Any serious attempt to create alternative curriculums and independent schools must effectively address these issues. Our education system must instill self-love, self-determination, self-defense, Black solidarity, cooperative economics, and the will and ability to dismantle the empire, free the land, and advance/protect our people…” ~ Agyei Tyehimba

Dr, Amos, takes up the context of education and how it is used to enslave, not only African Americans, but the masses in general, the average European, as well as the whole of the western so called civilization, are dominated by the reality defined by this psychotic few to be correct.

Whose reality is real? Reality is subjective. Reality is shaped by one’s place in the world. To deny a person’s reality, is to deny their place in the world.

All education is self-education.  Period.  It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting in a college classroom or a coffee shop.  We don’t learn anything we don’t want to learn.

Those people who take the time and initiative to pursue knowledge on their own are the only ones who earn a real education in this world.

Take a look at any widely acclaimed scholar, entrepreneur or historical figure you can think of.  Formal education or not, you’ll find that he or she is a product of continuous self-education.

BBC Learning – Online learning, support, and advice. This site offers internal and offsite links to a vast amount of materials.

Book TV – This is the companion site to Book TV on C-Span2. The site holds some current interviews with authors, many past interviews, opinions, reviews, and featured programs through online video.
CBC Archives — Relive Canadian history through thousands of available radio and television clips.
Discovery — This channel is home to several different networks that focus on the military, animals, travel, etc. The Discovery site offers a “Video of the Day” from its home page, a separate online video section, and a Discover Education center where teachers can accumulate materials for K-12 teaching. It’s impossible to list all their offerings here, so go discover!
History Channel – Visit the Video Gallery for a selection on historical topics. Like the Discovery Channel, this network provides many opportunities for you to gain access to information and reference materials.
NOVA — Watch current science shows or browse by category. PBS sponsors this channel.
Research Channel — Speakers, researchers and professors present revolutionary thoughts and discoveries. Use their Webstreams and an extensive video-on-demand library for research.
Weather Channel – You can learn about weather all over the world, but the Weather Channel also offers dynamic content based upon seasons and special conditions and a special multimedia and education section.

Online Archives

American Memory – The Library of Congress provides extensive multimedia offerings on various topics through their American Memory Collection, including their outstanding Built in America project that showcases historical buildings through photographs.
Fathom – This archive, provided by Columbia University, offers access to the complete range of free content developed for Fathom by its member institutions. The archives include online learning resources including lectures, articles, interviews, exhibits and seminars.
Internet Archive Open Educational Resources – A digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form.
National Archives – Provides primary source materials from NARA along with lesson plans for teaching with those sources.
National Climatic Data Center – The NCDC, a division of NOAA, maintains climatic archives, including lists of storms in given counties, and records about global extremes, etc.
The Rosetta Project – A global collaboration of language specialists and native speakers building a publicly accessible online archive of all documented human languages.
September 11 Digital Archive – This site uses electronic media to collect, preserve, and present the history of the 9/11 attacks.

From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites.
OpenCourseWare Consortium – This site provides a portal to search through hundreds of free courses or to add new courses you know about to the database.

It comes to the individual, the race, the nation, once in a life time to decide upon the course to be pursued as a career. The hour has now struck for the individual Negro as well as the entire race to decide the course that will be pursued in the interest of our own liberty.

Twentieth-century black nationalism was greatly influenced by Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican immigrant to the United States who founded the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1914. In an essay titled ‘‘The Future as I See It,’’ Garvey insisted that the UNIA was ‘‘organized for the absolute purpose of bettering our condition, industrially, commercially, socially, religiously and politically.’’ Garvey and the UNIA also promoted black emigration to Africa as a program of ‘‘national independence, an independence so strong as to enable us to rout others if they attempt to interfere with us’’ (‘‘Speech by Marcus Garvey’’). One of the UNIA’s main efforts was to establish black-owned businesses, the best known being the Black Star Line, a firm which planned to transport people and goods to Africa. Although 35,000 investors flocked to buy five-dollar shares of Black Star Line stock, the shipping firm and the UNIA’s other commercial ventures failed. Garvey was convicted of mail fraud in 1923 and eventually deported, but he remained a heroic figure to many future black nationalists.

We must try to make whatever viable solutions and concepts that we come across ours, taking what is useful and discarding what is not.In support of the Marcus Garvey Concept, successful in his time, adding inclusiveness and a sustainability doctrine, and dropping black nationalism, as nothing seen as black nationalism has, is or will be allowed. They are already going on about Black Identity Extremist and with inclusiveness lending to strength, we can possibly gather funding in the fashion that the pacifying church does every Sunday. (note): When we share our ideas we gather coherence.

Harmonic Standard 13 Moon Calendar Year

Calendar Reform and a Campaign for a New Time (Part 1):

13 Moons x 28 days = 364 days = 52 seven-day weeks. The 365th day of the year is called the Day Out of Time, a day to celebrate peace through culture, time is art and practice universal forgiveness so that everyone can start the next year fresh!

In the graphic above, the small numbers at the bottom of each square are the 12 Month/Gregorian calendar dates. For example, find the very first day of the 13 Moon calendar – do you see below where it says “7-26” – this is the Gregorian date July 26! Every day on the 13 Moon calendar includes the Gregorian date – this is so we don’t get lost in this time of transition.

Now find your birthday on the 13 Moon calendar. For example, if your birthday is October 13, look for the day on the calendar that is marked “10-13”. Note that October 13 is the 24th day of the Electric Moon. Electric Moon is the third moon of the 13 moons. You can write this date as 3.24.

Now find today’s date on the 13 Moon calendar. Note the moon and day of the moon it falls on.

This is all you need to know to begin following this basic 13 Moon Cycle! No need to memorize obscure rhymes like “30 days hath September,…” because every moon is exactly 28 days – the first day of the moon is always the first day of the week, the last day of the moon is always the last day of the week!

This consistent regularity is what makes the 13 Moon calendar a harmonic timespace matrix. This is just the tip of the iceberg of fourth-dimensional time…
